Cancer support line launches

Breathing Space team up with Macmillan
A telephone helpline that offers support to those living with mental health problems or suffering emotional distress has expanded its service to help people affected by cancer.
Advisers from the Breathing Space phone line are now able to offer this additional help thanks to training given by Macmillan Cancer Support.
Officially launched on World Cancer Day (Feb 4), the service is being piloted over the next 12 months in West Dunbartonshire, where there are 500 cases of cancer diagnosed each year.
It is also supported by West Dunbartonshire Council and, if proven to be of value, the service will be rolled out across the rest of Scotland.
Elspeth Atkinson, Macmillan’s director for Scotland, said: “When you’re affected by cancer, having the right kind of information, at the right time, is essential.
“This is why we were keen to work with Breathing Space and West Dunbartonshire Council to maximise the emotional support available.
“This service will operate in tandem with the telephone support already offered by Macmillan and help to ensure that a listening ear is available for those who need it.”
Breathing Space's skilled advisers, who are trained in cancer awareness, will be available to listen, offer advice and provide information about organisations that can provide further support, including Macmillan.
Doctors, social care workers and NHS 24 will be able to refer patients and carers to this "out of hours" service.
Tony McLaren, national coordinator for Breathing Space, said: "Cancer affects so many of us today and has a huge impact both on the person diagnosed and their family and loved ones.
"Not only are we trying to cope with the physical and financial implications brought on by the disease but the wide range of emotions we experience can also seem overwhelming. It's important to be able to talk about how you're doing mentally as well as physically.
"Breathing Space is here to help people with cancer and those close to them by listening to their concerns, fears and difficulties. Support is only a phone call away."
Provost Denis Agnew, of West Dunbartonshire Council, said he welcomed the partnership between the local authority, Macmillan and Breathing Space.
He added: “I am delighted we are progressing something as important as this service which will help people suffering from the emotional impact of what is such a devastating disease.
“This service has the full backing of West Dunbartonshire Council and we are delighted to be working with Macmillan and Breathing Space on this project.”
